Introduction of President's Challenge:
The President's Challenge is a movement supported by the kindness and generosity of people from all walks of life, regardless of culture, religion or family background, under the President’s patronage, to help those who are less fortunate. It is the President’s call to the nation to do their part to build a more caring and cohesive society. Each year, President's Challenge runs a fund-raising campaign for the beneficiaries selected every year by the President's Office.
Initiated by former President S R Nathan in 2000 and continued by President Tony Tan in 2012, to bring the community together to do their part to help the less fortunate. Beyond fundraising, President's Challenge also encompasses the annual President's Challenge Volunteer Drive and the President's Challenge Social Enterprise Award.
In 2015, President's Challenge celebrated its 15th anniversary at the President's Challenge 15th Anniversary Commemorate Dinner held at the Istana on 13 March 2015. At the event, President Tony Tan recognised 32 organisations and individuals that had made special contributions to the causes supported by the President's Challenge through the years. President Tony Tan also highlighted the importance of establishing a strong community in nation building. President’s Challenge would now seek to play a bigger role in nurturing stronger communities by expanding support for programmes beyond the social service sector and to encourage the young and elderly population to be involved in community work. In 2015, a record number of 87 charity organisations benefited from the funds raised through the President’s Challenge. These organisations come from various sectors, such as social service, healthcare and sports. 2015 also marked the launch of the President's Challenge Silver Volunteer Fund, a fund that encourages seniors to volunteer their time and skills to help the community.
The President's Challenge will continue to rally the community to help the less fortunate among us through the giving of time, skills and enterprise. Since 2000, about S$160 million has been raised for the charities under President's Challenge and more than 20,000 people have volunteered their time and skills for the President's Challenge Volunteer Drive. In addition, nineteen Social Enterprises have been recognised through the President's Challenge Social Enterprise Awards.
